## How the business started

Alexplains began the way most good tutoring does: in person, one student at a time, usually because a parent asked for help with a class that had stopped making sense. Word travelled; families who had moved, or could not make the drive, asked about online sessions, so online teaching was added. Both formats now run.

Something we are straight about: **online is harder to teach well with younger students**. A nine-year-old needs someone beside them, watching the hand that is writing, catching the hesitation before it becomes a wrong answer. It gets easier as students get older — by middle school most can hold a thread of reasoning across a shared screen, and by high school online is often better, because a screen can show a graph moving in a way a whiteboard cannot. We teach both ways, and we will tell a family which format we think suits their student, even when it is not the more convenient one to sell.

## Why the team is growing

One person can only cover so many subjects, time slots and places. More instructors means a student in a different city, or one who needs a particular evening, or one taking a course outside a single tutor's range, can still be matched with someone who genuinely knows the material. What does not change while growing: every session is one-on-one, instructors prepare for the specific class a student is taking, and the tone stays friendly — students learn far more from someone they are not embarrassed to be confused in front of. We would rather grow slowly than become a call centre with a whiteboard.

We are actively recruiting instructors, particularly for advanced mathematics and physics, and for in-person teaching in areas we do not yet cover.
